The following summary for Pitt County was provided by Mitch Smith.

FIRST DAY RESULTS OF POD BLASTING

Twenty-seven peanut samples were evaluated for their estimated optimum maturity and Southern Corn Rootworm damage on Friday, September 10th. This workshop was held at the shop of J.P. Davenport and Son in Pactolus. The communities that were represented were Bethel, Grimesland, Pactolus, and Stokes.

Of the samples that were blasted, 96% were represented by 3 varieties. These are Bailey (48%), Bailey II (41%), and Sullivan (7%). Listed below are comments related to each of these varieties plus one sample of Emery which was also submitted.

Bailey – The average estimated time for optimum maturity for Bailey was 10 days for the samples submitted. Samples ranged from 6 to 18 days until this time will be reached.

Bailey II – The average estimated time for optimum maturity for Bailey II was 12 days. Samples ranged from 8 to 21 days.

Sullivan – Two samples of this variety was submitted and the average estimated time for optimum maturity was 11 days.

Emery – One sample was submitted and the estimated time to reach optimum maturity was 10 days.
