Happy April Martin County! I hope this article finds you doing well and getting ready for spring! I have had enough cold weather and am ready to enjoy being outside.

With that being said, it is time once again to start preparing for the Martin County 4-H Livestock Show. The livestock show and sale will take place on April 5, 2018 at the Martin County Farmers Market. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information about that event.

Another event, that I want to invite you all to come out and enjoy will be the 2018 Martin County 4-H “Leading to Grow” Livestock Show for youth with exceptional needs. Martin County 4-H began this show over two years ago and it has been a huge blessing for our county. Participants showing livestock in our annual show and sale will partner with youth who have exceptional needs and teach them how to exhibit either a pig, goat, or lamb.

The Leading to Grow show will take place on April 4, 2018 at the Martin County Farmers Market. All youth participating need to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for a pizza party and to meet their livestock show partners. After dinner, we will have all participants and their partners go back in the barn and 4-H’ers will teach their exceptional needs partners how to show livestock. At 7 p.m. our official show will begin. Youth will be able to show their animals and have an official livestock judge ask them questions about what they have learned. Immediately following the show, we will have an awards ceremony for participants.

This is a wonderful event that helps teach all youth about accepting exceptional needs differences in other people. Our youth learn about team work and the importance of helping others learn. Everyone walks away with a better understanding of, not only how important agriculture is in our every day lives, but how working together and learning from each can make a huge difference in how we show compassion for others.

If you know any youth, between the ages of 5 and 18 years old, with exceptional needs who may be interested in participating in the Leading to Grow livestock show, please contact Susan Tyre at 252-789-4370 or via email at susan_tyre@ncsu.edu. There are required registration forms to be filled out for youth to participate. The deadline for registration is March 23, 2018.
